Traditional Folklore in Ireland

Ireland is a very old country known for it’s myths and legends. Famous for the storytelling tradition, you can always find many variations on the same story as they are a living thing, passed down through the generations via oral tradition.

Stories are often linked to a specific location like the Giant’s Causeway or the caves of Diarmuid and Grainne.

Giants, selkies, ghosts, witches, magical animals – the all make their homes in Ireland’s countryside.

In his book Ireland, Frank Delaney tells a fictional tale about a storyteller or Seanchai, who enthralls a young boy. Delaney does a wonderful job of telling several legends while also highlighting the tradition of the storyteller.
